Empowering Women Through Turning Trash To Treasure

Goal
500 Women empowered through acquirement of skills on how to turn trash to treasure and selling their products.

Objective
500 women empowered through skills training and seed capital by 31st December 2016.

Background
The project Trash to Treasure is about using those waste products and trash in our society and adding value to them by turning them to something valuable which is sellable enough as Income Generating venture. Most people do not see the opportunities in our environment to engage them for their economic use. This project therefore shall involve helping targeted vulnerable and poor women see such opportunities around them and also giving them skills enough to be able to turn trash and wastes around them into useful and valuable products that can be sold at an economic price. This therefore also promotes recycling of wastes and reducing wastes around communities thereby improving our environment while improving livelihoods of the targeted women through the “Sustainable Livelihoods & poverty eradication” program.

Most often than not, Zambian women are being debased and made to feel like trash by fellow men, our tradition and society. Some are also made to feel devalued by experiences like deprivation from education, rape victims, sexual harassments, violence etc.; all these limitations and hindrances are some of the issues women contend with from one generation to the other.

The objective for this project is to help poor and vulnerable women find greater meaning to life and make them true mothers  of our nation and custodian of destinies that are now and the ones yet unborn

Benefits of the Project
  1. It will help to add value on the lives of targeted women who are vulnerable and poor because of circumstances beyond their control and make them treasures by virtue of the training.
  2.  The participants will be taught how to make handmade bags, sandals, ear rings, bangles, etc. from trash thereby turning wastes to treasures.
  3. Participants can with the training start their own fashion outfit thereby creating jobs for themselves and others.
  4. The training will also empower women to be able to meet their personal needs thereby making them financially independent.
  5. The training will help in better utilizing the trash from fashion outfits by using as by-products for this purpose.
  6. The project will enhance waste management around targeted communities.
  7. The project will help alleviate poverty in the lives of poor women.
  8. Because the materials needed for the project are cheap, the cost of establishing the business after the training is relatively cheap too.
